The Optimist Clubs of Zone 8 welcome you to Meridian, MS, and the Holiday Inn. They and the Leadership of our District have planned a weekend of fun, fellowship and training for the whole family. Governor Jacqueline Sullivan encourages all members of the District to attend the meeting and the sharing of ideas to reach more youth. Read the Special Edition which describes other special and official events which are planned.

The Third Quarter District Meeting will be at the Holiday Inn Meridian E-I20-I59, Meridian, Mississippi, on April 20th-22nd. The deadline for reserving a room is April 10th. After that date there is no guarantee of a room. To reserve a room click on the link below and please follow the directions below.

1 - Click on the link below, the screen will say “Welcome to Holiday Inn Meridian E-I20/I59”. In the right-hand corner at the top of the page, click “Book Now”.

2 - The screen will then ask for the Check In Date and Check Out Date. Type the dates you will be staying, enter in the number of adults and children that will be staying in the room, and how many rooms you wish to book.

3 - Below you will see the Corporate ID (leave this blank), IATA # (leave this blank), and Group Code (type in AMO for Alabama-Mississippi Optimist)

4 - Click availability.

5 - You will then select the room type you wish to book.

6 - Click “Book This Room”.

7 - You will be directed to a screen that will prompt you for your information to book the room at the rate of $114 + applicable tax (9.5%). This includes breakfast.

8 - If you have any problems, you may call the Holiday Inn at 601-693-0160. You will need to tell the Front Desk Agent that you are part of the Optimist Block.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO LIKE TO PROCRASTINATE TO THE LAST MINUTE, PLEASE NOTE THE APRIL 10th IS THE DEADLINE. IT IS EASIER TO CANCEL THE ROOM THAN TO TRY AND GET ONE AFTER THE DEADLINE.

Hugh Cranford All-Scholastic Team


$1,000.00 Scholarship Opportunity Available For the Hugh Cranford All-Scholastic Team

Two special awards recognizing the Academic accomplishments and/or Community Service of five Junior Golfers. Golfers have a chance to apply for one or both. There are separate applications for each award category.

Deadline to apply is April 1, 2018.

Please share this with your golfers.

Academic and Essay Award-- (4 golfers selected)

Community Service Award- (1 golfer selected)

Applications are NOW being accepted. The team will consist of golfers between the ages of 16 and 18 as of the last day of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships (August 1, 2018). Junior golfers selected to the team will receive an automatic exemption into the championships, complimentary registration that includes tournament entry, hotel accommodations and meals plus $1,000.00 scholarship. The Scholarship will be sent directly to the financial aid department of the recipient's chosen University, College or Technical School.

Five junior golfers internationally-wide will be selected. The selection will be made by the end of April to give the junior golfers not selected an opportunity to still enter a district qualifying tournament.

The ALABAMA-MISSISSIPPI DISTRICT of Optimist International is an association of Optimist Clubs across the two states. Greetings, Optimist Family!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, ALMS Optimists! I trust you and yours had an enjoyable and blessed Thanksgiving. It seems as if time is really whizzing past us; therefore, we need to optimistically catch up with it and add more steam to our ALMS Train engine.

The Second Quarter District Meeting will be January 19-21 in Hattiesburg, MS; I implore you to do your best to attend. The proposed training will include Orientation to Optimism for New Members, Don’t be Afraid of Social Media/Technology, a Very Special Skit, and some Special Activities for our Guests; I don’t believe you will be disappointed if you attend. So, go ahead and pack, gas up, and get aboard The ALMS Optimist Strong Train for the Second Quarter District Meeting!

Last, but not least, I want to send A BIG THANK YOU to the fifty plus attendees (OI Trainer, Fatima Plater, ALMS Presenters, Members, and Guests)) who supported our first Quarter Optimist Strong Conference; from the majority of the evaluations, everyone had an awesome time and received valuable information and training!
