Dear Optimist Club Leadership,

I am writing to you to share a unique summer golf tournament that positions our District as one of the best supporters of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship. Our goal this year is to gain the support of 50 or more junior golfers. Our region, the states of Alabama and Mississippi, are blessed to have a great number of youth golfers. Our mission is to find them and encourage them to participate in our Alabama Mississippi Optimist District Championship and International Qualifier on June 10 at the Foley Golf Course in Foley, Alabama.

Your club is encouraged to become an event sponsor and your club members are encouraged to participate as volunteers. A hole sponsor is priced at $125 (including the cost of preparing the sign). Clubs that make the recommended $100 contribution to the event will receive a hole sponsor placement. Naturally, any support that your club or individuals in your community gives will be greatly appreciated.

The entry fee is $75 and includes the green fees, range balls, water, and drinks on the course awards. Players interested in playing a practice round on Sunday, June 9th can secure their practice round for a fee of $25.

What makes this tournament so unusual is that each of the participants is also competing for an opportunity to qualify for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship at the Trump Doral Country Club & Spa in July. Those players that qualify for the Junior Golf Championship will receive financial assistance from the Optimist Clubs in the Alabama Mississippi Optimist District #29 to compete at the next level.

The District Qualifier includes seven age levels, four divisions for boys and three divisions for girls. The age groups are Boys 10 & under; 11 – 12; 13 – 15, and 16 – 18. The Girls 11 – 12, 13 – 14 & 15 – 18.

Our goal with this golf tournament is to support the youth golf movement in Alabama and Mississippi. We know that we have more interest in golf at the Middle School and High School levels. We are also seeing growth in the number of golf courses offering youth leagues and lessons. The goal of an Optimist Club is to improve the lives of young people, the community and ourselves. This golf tournament is just one of many ways that Optimist Clubs around the world make a difference in the lives of young people.

In closing, please share the information on this tournament within your Optimist Club and externally to any of the golfing relationships that you have. We hope to secure event sponsors that include supporting one age group qualifier ($730 per qualifier) and those that support a hole sponsorship. In all sponsor levels, the cost of creating the signage rests with those organizing this event.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey A. Keener
